Why I Stopped Watching The X Files

I started watching the X Files but not when it just started way back in 1993. For one thing, my son was too young to see it.

I think it was about 1996 when we started watching it. And it became a family ritual and this is how it happened.

At that time his dad and I were separated. He went to his dad's for the weekend and I would bring him home Sunday evenings.

It became a routine that once he was ready for school the next day, we'd watch The X Files together. It came on late, but there was nothing else on Sunday night that interested us.

We had a big ol' television that took up too much space, and it was losing its color tones. Yes, tube tv! Before digital never mind Smart.

I bought a much smaller television - 13" - because it had a VHS tape player built in. And that was $ 389.00 back then! Thanks to my Sears card... Anyway, my son at that time was playing games hooked up to the television, when he had friends over. Not that often.

So now we had two televisions in our cramped space. O.K., so it served to hold the goldfish bowl, surface duty.

And -- I thought this was so funny but kept a straight face -- he was kind of hard to get up in the mornings. Anyone else ever had a kid like that?

So one early morning I tip-toed around his room (we were crushed into a 500 sq. ft. apartment) with a tape measure calculating whether or not that big tv would fit in there, and he could hook up his game devices to it.

Three or four kids could sit on the bottom bunk and play, if I could cram it in there.

He woke up and mumbled "what are you doing?" I answered "I'm checking this out to see if we could fit the tv in here".

He slept on the top bunk and Whoa! I swear he levitated right up off that bed and arced through the air, landing on his feet like a cat.

Almost two decades later, I wonder if he has ever woken up so fast since that day. Aren't kids great?

During the last two seasons of The X Files our schedule changed and he was no longer home on Sunday nights. I stopped watching it. It simply wasn't the same without him.

But I've done the necessary binge watch marathons to make up for that. I finished The X Files Season 9 last night. Because of the new six episodes coming out soon!

Here's a quick reminder of events from Season 9:
